Winchelsea Station

Taylor Technology Systems installed a new Ticket Vending Machine and CCTV system at the rural Winchelsea Railway Station, on behalf of Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), to provide members of the public with added safety and security, and also to record the movements of vehicles and pedestrians across the adjacent level crossing.

GTR had identified Winchelsea as a station requiring investment to encourage people to travel by rail, and to meet the demands of the railway and the travelling public, today and in the future.
The station is positioned in a quiet rural location, and it had therefore been recognised that there was a requirement for increased security to give members of the public an added feeling of safety and security while using the isolated station.

TTS installed a new Ticket Vending Machine (TVM) and CCTV to cover the station, providing both asset protection and to protect members of the public. The installed CCTV system also had the added value of being able to record the movements of vehicles and pedestrians across the adjacent level crossing.

The project required team members and cabling to pass from one side of the track to the other. It was therefore essential for us to implement a complex Safe Systems of Work, including a local line blockage. This required additional resources, such as a Controller of Site Safety who ensured all staff were briefed on the safety of the system, ensuring safety during the blockage duration.

In addition, due to there being no existing infrastructure, TTS needed to install a CCTV column, which required excavations adjacent to the track. This required a specialist competent civil engineering team, trained to work in this environment, ensuring underground cables were not damaged and thus avoiding electric shocks and electric arcs.
