Due to rising sea levels, Ipswich has suffered with flooding over the years, so a new flood defence scheme was introduced. The 132kV power cables feeding the port of Felixstowe needed diverting in order for the flood defences to operate. The scheme required diverting the HV cables under the dock, via two shafts and a tunnel. At the top of each shaft was a Tunnel Head House with associated control equipment.

UKPN appointed TTS to design a Security System to detect unauthorised access, which could result in a major detrimental impact on the availability and delivery of supply to the Port of Felixstowe. TTS assessed the risks associated with the project and designed out the requirement to work in a confined space environment, thus eliminating the associated hazards. The two tunnel heads needed to be linked, so wireless point-to-point microwave links were chosen to communicate between the two sites. The design had to be robust and avoid any maritime or marine-band radio frequencies.
